These gold coins are often used as jewelry or as gifts at weddings to protect against Turkey's high inflation. Smaller denominations sometimes have a hole to wear the coins as jewelry.There are different types of Turkish gold coins, including the 25 kurush, 50 kurush, 100 kurush, 250 kurush and 500 kurush piaster gold coins with images of Kemal Atatürk or Ismet Inonu. There are also older Kurush gold coins with Arabic lettering and the tughra, the name of the Ottoman sultan. The two different numbers on the 100 piaster coin have a historical background. The number 1923 commemorates the end of the Turkish War of Independence. If you add the number below it to the year, you get the year of minting. A gold coin with the mintage 1923/23 was therefore minted in 1946.
